Wake Up, O Sleeper! {Wake}

Sleep. Sleep is good. I like sleep, even though I don’t get nearly enough of it. Our bodies and minds and souls need sleep. However, sleep is not good in the spiritual. It causes us to be blind to what is going on around us. It causes us to be deceived by the enemy and the troubles of this world.

There are a few verses in Scripture that stirred my spirit to some areas that I, along with many others tend to be disillusioned in. The world around us is broken, hurting, lost and searching for purpose. God is wanting to partner with us to get their attention.

He is calling us to wake up to His voice, His truth and His purposes.

Wake Up To Truth

“This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Ephesians 5:14

It is the truth of God’s Word that awakens sleepy souls. His Word speaks life, hope and salvation to us! It is the light that shines in dark places and dark hearts. We must first be awakened to His truth before we can proclaim it to those around us. Make no mistake, this is our ultimate calling as Christ followers. We are to unashamedly and gracefully speak the truth of who God is.

Wake Up To Our Identity In Christ

Now after He had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. She went and reported to those who had been with Him, while they were mourning and weeping.” Mark 16:9-10

Along with knowing the truth of who God is, we must then discover the truth of who we are in Christ. On this side of the cross, we are no longer bound by sin. We are free! We are no longer bound by shame. There is no condemnation! We have the nature of Christ! We are whole! We are healed! We are beloved children of God!

In the book of Mark, Mary Magdalene is referred to as the woman who Jesus had cast seven demons out of. For a long time, that is who she was. That was her reputation. Then Jesus entered the picture. He saved her, set her free and called her by name. He created her to be beautiful and well. Out of this new identity, she ran to tell everyone of His resurrection.

When we know who we are in Christ, others take notice. They desire to have what we have and live how we live. They begin to want to know who we know…Jesus.

Wake Up To God’s Work In The Earth

I’m sure that like me, you live a fast paced, high intensity, sleep deprived, full life. I love my life! God has opened many doors of growth and opportunity. But, I find myself thinking a whole lot about me and what He wants to do with my life. It’s very small thinking and small living. That is the complete opposite of that life that He calls us to live. We are to be others focused.

Just last night, The Lord brought a divine interruption into my life. I was supposed to be at church for our youth service, but I was exhausted. I decided to head to a coffee shop for some down time. When I was leaving, a sweet young mom struck up a conversation. Guess what happened? We hit it off! We are like minded and have the same heart for Jesus and His creation. She and her family had just recently moved to Baton Rouge and she has been in desperate need of community. My life is all about community! Now, I have the joy of ushering her into my community where I believe she will fit right in.

As we hold loosely to our plans and agendas and ideas, God can shape them into something far better. His reach can go further than ours. And His love can change hearts of stone into hearts of flesh.

Are you awake to God’s truth, who you are in Christ and the work that He wants to do around you?
